Review Your Financial Situation

Your debt management plan starts with answering these questions to get a good snapshot of your current debt:
  • Do you have a monthly budget?
  • Do you have an emergency fund?
  • What debts do you currently owe?
  • What’s your monthly payment?
  • How much can you afford to pay each month?

Not sure how to answer some of these questions? Start simple with your budget to know how much you can realistically repay each month. Build an emergency fund to prevent staying in the debt cycle. Then create a debt inventory (worksheet) to organize your debt.

We’re happy to help you navigate your financial situation and develop a plan to get ahead of debt. Find a Member Center and meet with one of our financial coaches to get a clearer picture of your current debt.

Manage Your Money to Get Ahead of Debt

Practice these helpful tips and smart strategies for managing debt:
  • Make a financial commitment to stop borrowing money.
  • Evaluate your spending habits to better understand what may be causing you to sway from your goals and learn what can motivate you to stay on a healthy, sustainable financial journey.
  • Consider refinancing or consolidating multiple debts, including credit cards, into one easier-to-manage payment or a lower-rate loan.
  • Establish a savings plan to build a starter emergency fund of at least $1,000 in case of unexpected expenses. Use a WPCU Club Account or Money Market Account to grow your emergency fund.
