3 Smart Ways to Save on Thanksgiving Grocery Shopping

Turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pie—oh my! No matter which dish you're looking forward to most, Thanksgiving is a holiday that fills our plates and our hearts.

However, if high grocery costs are already gobbling up your budget, the idea of preparing an entire Thanksgiving feast can feel a bit overwhelming.

The good news is that you can still enjoy all your Thanksgiving favorites while stretching hard-earned dollars. Today, we're sharing three smart ways to save money on Thanksgiving groceries:

  1. Buy a Little at a Time
To save some money (and beat the big crowds!), try to spread out your Thanksgiving purchases over a few weeks instead of buying everything all at once. This way, you can take advantage of weekly sales, use store coupons and avoid the shock of one big grocery bill.
One strategy is to buy non-perishable items like baking supplies, canned goods and spices first. Save fresh produce and dairy for closer to the holiday. You may also find great deals on frozen turkeys in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.
  2. Share the Love
Perhaps the best way to reduce your costs—and cooking time—is to host a potluck-style Thanksgiving. Invite friends or family to bring their favorite dish to share and enjoy the variety of flavors and traditions. If any guests don't cook, they can always contribute things like drinks and ice, plastic plates, napkins, utensils or even takeaway containers for leftovers!
Another smart idea is to buy ingredients in bulk and split the bill with friends or neighbors who are hosting their own gatherings. Many times, staple ingredients such as butter, flour, sugar and potatoes are more affordable when purchased in larger quantities.
  3. Make the Most of Leftovers
Everyone loves Thanksgiving leftovers, but did you know they're also a great way to stretch your budget even further? Get creative with leftover turkey sandwiches, stuffing and gravy casseroles or hearty bean soups that can keep your family fed for days after the big meal.
On the sweeter side, you can use leftover canned pumpkin to make muffins and repurpose cranberry sauce in oatmeal or smoothies. No matter what you make, using up all your leftovers prevents food waste and may help you avoid yet another grocery trip.
