Stay Merry & Bright: 3 Tips to Reduce Holiday Financial Stress

Between gifts, travel, parties and keeping up with cherished traditions, the holidays can quickly become a source of financial stress. At a time when many people are already feeling a pinch on everyday essentials, it's even more important to stay mindful of our holiday spending.

Wondering how to make the holidays merry and bright while on a budget? Check out these helpful tips:

  1. Make a Gifting Game Plan
Gifts aren't something most people normally buy each month, so they can easily throw off your budget if you don't plan ahead. Start by making a list of everyone you want to shop for. Then, look for opportunities to streamline your list. For example, if you're shopping for a large family, suggest a gift exchange or agree to only buy gifts for the children. This way, everyone can save money while still celebrating together.
  2. Embrace “No-Spend" Holiday Traditions
Remember, you don't need to splurge to make the most of the holiday season. Consider starting some no-spend (or low-spend) holiday traditions such as a family game night, cookie-baking party or movie marathon. Even something as simple as taking a walk or a drive to look at festive lights in the neighborhood can be meaningful and memorable.
  3. Leave Wiggle Room in Your Holiday Budget
Whether it's a last-minute gift, a flat tire or overnight shipping costs, surprise expenses can—and do—pop up during the holidays. To plan ahead, set aside a little extra in your holiday budget for the unexpected. If you don't end up using the money, you can always save it for next year!
