Your social security number is important and in the wrong hands, it could be used to steal your benefits, and your money. Use these tips to safeguard your social security number from fraud. First, store your social security card and personal information in a safe, secure place. Tip 1: Leave it at home. Don't carry your social security card or number around with you. One way criminals can use your social security number is to file taxes in your name and collect your tax refund. Tip 2: File taxes early. File your taxes early in the season to avoid this. Tip 3: Monitor your credit. Always keep a close eye on your credit reports to spot unusual activity or inaccurate information. You can get a free copy of your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Finally, when a family member passes it's important to notify the Social Security Administration to cancel their benefits. Tip 4: Cancel unused benefits. Make sure you handle their bills and put their important documents in a safe place.
