You may need to enter your PIN when using your chip debit card, at certain merchant locations.

March 18, 2016

WPCU’s primary focus is to keep your information secure. That's why we recently introduced Visa® chip cards, which help reduce the risk of counterfeit fraud.

When you’re out shopping you may notice that some merchants won’t let you choose “Credit” when using a chip debit card, and they may require you to enter your PIN to complete the debit transaction.

If this happens, don’t worry. Your chip debit card is working the way it should. These different verification options are controlled by the merchants, not by WPCU.

Here are some things to remember when you’re out shopping:

  • Make sure you know your debit card PIN by heart. That will make it easier when merchants require you to enter your PIN to complete a transaction. If you need to reset your PIN call us at (800) 762-0047.
  • Cashiers might mistakenly tell you that WPCU controls the transaction and verification process. If this happens please remember that chip cards are still very new, and many merchants and their employees are still learning all the facts.

If you have any questions please call us at (800) 762-0047. As always, thank you for being a WPCU member!
