FAQ: Investments > 401K & SEP Rollovers

  • I have started a new job. What are my options for my previous employer’s 401(k)?

    Generally, you have four options:

    • Take the money out of the retirement account. This allows you to have access to the funds to do whatever you like, but it also comes with some stiff penalties from the IRS, which could hurt your long-term retirement goals.
    • Stay invested in your current plan. This sounds great because you are familiar with the plan and your investments. However, it may limit your options of available investments.
    • Move the money to your new 401(k) plan. Some employers will allow you to transfer money into your new plan.
    • Roll your 401(k) funds over to an IRA. This avoids any tax penalties and lets your retirement money continue to grow tax-deferred.
